1/26/2005 at 04:02 hours, the Haworth Fire Department was dispatched to 209 Schraalenburgh Road for a working house fire. The fire was located by Haworth Police Officer Thomas Ryan during routine patrol. Dumont Police Officer Brian Joyce arrived on scene and assisted PO Ryan with the search for trapped occupants. Heavy fire conditions hampered rescue attempts, but PO Joyce was able to save a Labrador Retriever from the house.
On arrival, the Fire Department was met with heavy fire conditions, blowing out the second floor windows and attic. Mutual-aid was requested to the scene from Demarest, Harrington Park, Closter and Dumont. HFD attempted an interior attack but had to go to exterior operations due to heavy heat and heavy fire. Shortly after crews evacuated the structure, the roof collapsed. Once the main body of fire was finally knocked down, companies searched for any victims still inside the house. A female fatality was located on the second floor and was eventually removed by county investigators. The fire is believed to be caused by a space heater on the second floor. Haworth Car 151 (Chief Kiel) had the command. (Info from DFD website)
