In May of 2002 around 11:00 AM, the Haworth Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 111 Valley Road, across from the Haworth Public School. As engine 161 pulled up, they saw heavy fire rolling out of a second floor window. Lt. Jim McGloin ,and firefighters Kenneth Doyle and Dave Brown stretched the first line in, and encountered a heavy black smoke and a lot of heat in the second floor hallway.
In fact it was so hot that the Bullard Thermal Imaging Camera failed. As the crew was about to make entry to the fire room, they were forced to back out due to ammunition going off in the fire room. After backing out, the fire was knocked down from the outside, and minimum damage was done to the first floor and other second floor rooms.
Mutual aid was called in from the following towns: Closter, Demarest, Dumont, Harrington Park, as well as New Milford and Norwood for cover-up. The Haworth Ambulance Corps. also stood by on scene.
